Koffee Klatch K(C)ompetitions
A truly fun activity I have promoted over the years for farms that have many boarders/clients that do not leave the property but would like to have an in-house horse show.
I am not an accredited judge, but I have judged many schooling shows. I judge with the eye of an instructor more than that of a judge. Having scribed for many a known judge, I know what they look for and how the riders are perceived even just from the entry down the center line. I also have been in competition myself and know the stress, nerves and the secret to the warm up to maximize my time, my effort and money investment.
With the prompt of a long-time student, asking to have in-house shows to help get ready for the real thing as well as giving those that do not leave the farm with their horse or will not leave the farm with their horse for whatever reasons, the opportunity to learn this skill, I developed this platform for clients and it spread to other farms wanting the service.
I will come to an in-house horse show and judge it with entries from Walk-Trot to Fourth Level. Scoring is generous without being false but meant to build confidence with constructive criticism and compassion to the process of becoming an organized, focused competitor.
It has been a yearly tradition at a local farm where the clients love to have me see that they indeed took the advice given at the show and practiced with their coach to have me back to see their improvements and I am usually astounded at how much the comfortable atmosphere of riding the tests help riders relax , analyze and feel safe to be critiqued to be their better selves. Many also try out a new level in front of me as they are questioning if indeed the training is confirmed for the next level without being embarrassed to find that they were not confirmed yet. It is a safe and constructive environment to be open to asking questions and learning.
Owners of the farms can either give awards or not. I do the score sheets just like any other show to give it the feel and texture of competition. I do however require more time between the tests because I do like
to discuss the comments not just write them on the score sheet and sometimes will work with the rider for a moment to help them understand a biomechanical need or physic that they are not confirmed in so that when they return to their instructor, they hear their lessons better and with a more open mind.
What makes the Koffee Klatch Kompetitions different from a ride/critique /ride is that they only ride once. HOWEVER if I find that there is something more I can do to help, I may ask the rider to return to the arena and I may bring music to the moment to teach tempo or the like. “Personalized Judging to Explain Competing” is the goal.
Fee is dependent on travel and how many entries. I love working with rider/horse combinations to build confidence to compete and help them in their sports psychology as well as the method to riding the best test!
